In 1956, Riviera Volkswagen of Manhattan Beach, California, hired Herman Cook as a salesperson, beginning what would become a passionate and lifelong relationship with the Volkswagen family. After excelling in the sales field, Mr. Cook assumed the reins as general manager of Riviera VW. Subsequently, in 1960 Mr. Cook purchased El Centro Imports, a Volkswagen dealership in the Imperial Valley. After successfully operating the dealership for six years, Volkswagen awarded Mr. Cook a franchise dealership in Encinitas, California in 1966. Encinitas was just beginning to develop into the place it is today and rolling hills of sage outnumbered businesses along Encinitas Boulevard. Over the next sixteen years, Mr. Cook dedicated all of his time, energy and resources to building a dealership that would not only bear his name, but embody his impeccable character and high business morals.

Dennis Cook began working for his father while attending high school in El Centro, California and it was not long before Dennis also found his passion in the automobile business. In 1967 when Herman founded the dealership in Encinitas, Dennis was by his side, immersing himself in every facet to the trade and helping the dealership grow roots in the local community. After high school graduation, Dennis pursued a business degree at San Diego State University and each summer put his degree to practical use, working in every department at the dealership. Upon graduation in 1970, Dennis invested in the company and ultimately purchased the dealership from his father when he retired in 1980.

Since moving to Encinitas in 1967, Dennis and Herman Cook Volkswagen have been very involved and committed to the local community. Dennis has served as President of the Encinitas Rotary Club, acted with his wife Susan as co-directors of the Encinitas Rotary Cup Soccer Tournament for many years, served both as the Chairman and a member of the Board of Managers at the Magdalena Ecke Family Y.M.C.A and supported San Diego State Athletics as a corporate sponsor. As a family owned and operated business, Herman Cook Volkswagen is committed to supporting the community in every potential way.

Throughout the five decades of the dealership's development, Herman Cook Volkswagen has sought to uphold the highest moral integrity in all aspects of the automobile business. Nationally recognized as the Dealership of the Year by the American International Automobile Dealer Association as well as being an AAA Approved Service Facility for over 20 years, Herman Cook Volkswagen is extremely proud of its nationally renowned reputation in customer satisfaction. This was never more evident than in 2003, when Herman Cook Volkswagen was awarded the Business of the Year by the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce.
