Celebrating Excellence: Khoi Nguyen Achieves VW Master Technician Certification

We’re proud to recognize an exciting achievement within the Herman Cook VW service team. Service Technician Khoi Nguyen has officially earned Volkswagen Master Technician status, a distinction that reflects an exceptional level of Volkswagen-specific training, technical knowledge, and hands-on expertise. This elite status is held only by a small percentage of service technicians nationwide. Reaching this level takes years of dedication, experience, and a commitment to mastering today’s increasingly advanced Volkswagen vehicles. We sat down with Khoi to learn more about his journey as a technician and what this accomplishment means to him.

How did you get started as an automotive technician?

I completed The Universal Technical Institute (UTI) Automotive Program trade school. I worked at various VW Dealers in San Diego County and VW Academy’s specialized training program to get where I am today. Have been in the automotive industry for 23 years now.

How long have you been at Herman Cook VW?

6 years

What made you want to pursue the VW Master Technician certification?

It is the highest achievement a service technician can obtain. I am honored to have reached this level of expertise in my career. It represents the highest tier of brand-specific expertise for diagnosing complex electrical, engine, and transmission issues on VW vehicles.

What training did you have to complete to earn the certification?

Completing over 520 hours of intense, instructor-led advanced factory classroom training and passing rigorous diagnostic assessments. It was very hands-on with a large focus on new technology. I had to score in the 90th percentile to pass which was tough!

What does earning this certification mean to you?

It has been a goal for me that I’ve wanted to achieve. I have been working on it for a very long time.

Is there anyone you’d like to recognize who helped you reach this milestone?

My Service Manager Eric. Thank you for pushing me to go for it!

How does having a VW Master Technician on the service team ultimately benefit our customers?

To have the highest quality Volkswagen training and fine-tuning my diagnostic ability to know how to fix every vehicle the right way the first time. We have such a great team here at Cook VW and there is so much knowledge with the other techs. This adds to our already awesome team!

How has Volkswagen technology changed during your career?

It has changed tremendously. Since electric vehicles came out everything is heavily software-based. You really have to know what you’re doing because tech is always changing and you need to learn and change with it.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Spending time with my family. As a father of two I am always keeping busy!

What advice would you give to a technician who hopes to become a VW Master Technician someday?

Keep moving forward. Accept all challenges and Don’t Give Up!

Looking back at everything it took to reach this milestone, what are you most proud of?

I’m very proud that I was persistent and kept on trying and learning. I’m honored to now be a VW Master Technician!
