The Chattanooga plant doesn’t look like your typical auto assembly line. If you ever visit this Volkswagen assembly plant, you’ll see a herd of about 50 sheep that graze around the solar panels to help fight off vegetation and soil erosion. The Chattanooga assembly plant has a 66-acre, 8-MW solar array with more than 33,000 panels. These solar panels can supply up to 9.3% of the plant’s electricity needs during full production. To put this in perspective, that’s enough to power 1,600 homes every year. This effort helps continue Volkswagen’s goal of sustainability as well as keep its operational costs down. 

You’ll also find about 4,500 Volkswagen team members at the Chattanooga assembly plant. Since the Chattanooga location was established in 2008, people have flocked to this location to advance in careers such as high-tech research and development, vehicle assembly, engineering, testing, and management. Even students can explore potential career paths through development programs like the Volkswagen Academy and Volkswagen e-Labs.
