A Symbol Of Hope: The Volkswagen T2 Bus That Survived The California Fires

The January 2025 Palisades Fire left devastation in its wake, but an unlikely symbol of hope and resilience emerged from the smoke: a seemingly unscathed 1977 Volkswagen T2 microbus. Captured in a viral Associated Press photograph, the Volkswagen T2, sometimes referred to as the “magic bus,” appeared to have survived the destruction. With help from the VW community, Volkswagen reached out to the bus’s owner to assess its condition. The Restoration Of An Icon

The 1977 Volkswagen T2, named Azul, was brought to the Volkswagen Group of America Oxnard Facility, which is home to a collection of the brand’s historic vehicles. There, the vehicle team inspected, repaired, and replaced every interior and exterior component of Azul while honoring the bus’s history.

“From the moment we first saw Azul, our goal was to ensure the story of the vehicle wasn’t erased by the fires, but brought back to life by restoring it, reuniting it with its owner, and returning it to the road,” said Gunnar Wynarski, a vehicle technician at the Oxnard Facility. The restoration work became a collaborative effort involving VW technicians, GE Kundensport, and other specialized partners.

Azul Attends The 2025 L.A. Auto Show

After its complete restoration, Azul made its public debut at the Volkswagen booth during the 2025 Los Angeles Auto Show. Attendees had a chance to obtain limited-edition, wooden collectible versions of Azul created by Candylab™, a small reminder of how impactful bus culture and community can be in the face of hardship. To drive home this message, Volkswagen pledged an additional monetary donation to the California Fire Foundation to support first responders and their families throughout the state.
